CARD Launches New Emergency Preparedness Training for
LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Communities
WHO: Jimmy Nguyen, LGBT Project Coordinator and Community Educator, CARD
Âna-Marie Jones, Executive Director, CARD
WHAT: Due to stigma and discrimination as well as the unique threats to the community,
there are specific steps that need to be taken to ensure that LGBT communities are
prepared for emergencies. This interactive course will teach participants the many
issues that may arise for LGBT individuals during and after a disaster. CARD’s
curriculum covers emergency preparedness and disaster response for the whole
LGBT community, including youth and elderly members. Organizations serving
this community will learn how to incorporate preparedness and response into their
advocacy, programs, general operations, and fundraising strategies. This is an ideal
course for advocates, activists, allies, and people within the LGBT community.
Course Objectives:
1. Understand the unique emergency preparedness and response needs of
the LGBT community.
2. Understand how LGBT preparedness supports overall community
preparedness.
3. Recognize why there is a need for a LGBT-specific emergency
preparedness curriculum for service providers and individuals.
4. Be able to list at least three LGBT emergency preparedness related
action items.
